About the talks

SPEAKERS AND SUBJECTS

For the speakers and topics, we adhere to several 'rules of the game'. These are:

  • Speakers must align with our diversity values. We encourage both new and experienced speakers.
  • We provide a platform for speakers and topics that may not receive attention elsewhere.
  • Each evening includes one hard and one soft topic.
    Examples of hard topics include development PHP, JavaScript Core WP-CLI Hosting and caching.
    Soft topics can be related to marketing, SEO content, pagebuilder customer contact case study, methodology Open Source and community.

TALK SETUP

  • The talk must be in English due to our international audience.
  • Duration: approximately 20-25 minutes with 5-10 minutes for questions.
  • Preferably a specific and practical story. E.g. demonstrate a few settings.
  • The aim of the talk is informative, not commercial; it should not be a commercial pitch, but mentioning products and companies is allowed.
  • Pro bono: our speaker gift goes to a charity. Speakers can select a charity of their choice. Otherwise the gift is assigned to Cybersoek (free neighborhood computer, smartphone and website support).
  • There is a maximum of 50 attendees.
  • Large screen with HDMI connection is available.
  • Typically two speakers per evening.
  • No naming and shaming.
  • We can assist you in preparing your talk.

We assess and evaluate your request based on relevance and content. If necessary, we provide feedback on the presentation, such as structure and length.
3. Showtime

We schedule your presentation, give an introduction, and then the stage is yours.

You can speak about anything related to WordPress, including development, design, security, SEO, content creation, marketing, and case studies. We welcome both technical and non-technical topics.
Typically, our presentations range from 20 to 40 minutes, followed by a 10-15 minute Q&A session. However, we can accommodate different lengths depending on the topic and format.
No, you don’t need prior speaking experience. We encourage both new and experienced speakers to present. We can provide support and guidance to help you prepare.
Speaking at the meetup enhances your visibility in the community, helps you build your network, and positions you as an expert in your field. It’s also a great opportunity to share knowledge and give back to the community.
You can apply by filling out our speaker application form on our website. Provide a brief outline of your topic and any relevant experience or background information.
We provide a projector, screen, microphone, and laptop with necessary connectors. If you need any special equipment, please let us know in advance.
Yes, co-presentations are welcome. If you’re collaborating with another speaker, please include their details in your application so we can plan accordingly.
A clear structure helps keep the audience engaged. Start with an introduction, followed by the main content divided into key points, and end with a conclusion or summary. Don’t forget to allocate time for Q&A.
If you need to cancel or reschedule, please notify us as soon as possible. We understand that sometimes unexpected things happen and will work with you to find an alternative date if needed.
We often record or live-stream presentations to share with the wider community. If you’re not comfortable with this, please let us know when you apply so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Don’t sell: avoid turning your presentation into a sales pitch. The audience is there to learn, not to be sold to.

Don’t overload on jargon: Steer clear of excessive technical jargon or acronyms that might confuse attendees who are not as familiar with the terminology.

Don’t go off-topic: stick to the topic you’ve prepared and avoid digressing into unrelated areas.

Don’t read from slides: do not read directly from your slides. Use them as a guide, but focus on speaking directly to the audience.

Don’t run over time: respect the schedule and ensure you do not exceed your allotted time. It’s important to leave time for questions and interaction.
